BUDS by Shangri-La

to engage

Exploring an adventurous journey concept, Kingsmen created an original, self-directed and experiential environment for young minds. Drawing elements from the Chinese classic “Journey to the West”, each play arena goes through challenges to avoid danger or progress to new zones of imagination.

To cater to different ages, an additional toddler zone was set up, in line with safety requirement for children age 4 and below to approach entertainment in a soft play area. In the main play zone, the multi-leveled tactile playground aims to further engage the children in activity.

The immersive indoor and outdoor play space of 2,150sqm is an expansive themed attraction for family bonding and fun. Beyond taking young minds on a journey, BUDS by Shangri-La caters to parents’ decision to either facilitate their kids, participate in programmes together or rest while their kids venture off safely.

The entire themed attraction has its distinct and versatile branding bolstered by Kingsmen. Tying in the whimsical and fantastical playground are expressive colours in each room, encouraging curiosity within an evocative learning space.

General Post Office

Adjacent to the GPO is SingPost’s flagship Philatelic Store, a heritage corner paying tribute to SingPost’s 150 year history. Like stepping into a collector’s store, the space is filled with nostalgia in its wide range of Singapore stamps, thematic MyStamps and philatelic gifts.

Behind the futuristic revamp, the design of the new GPO incorporates elements from the historic Fullerton Building GPO, reflecting the continuity of SingPost’s heritage. Iconic elements of the Fullerton GPO were adopted and translated into modern graphics on the walls, glass panels and POPStation lockers, while historical postal artefacts, such as earlier versions of the posting boxes, were recreated.

A row of these post boxes line the entrance of the GPO, evoking a sense of nostalgia and illustrating the design transformation of post boxes since Singapore’s independence. The walls at the new GPO resemble the grey concrete buildings of the civic district and pendant lights inspired by the colonial era. A clock was also specially designed to emulate the original clock from the Fullerton GPO.

At the Philatelic Store, a colonial-era red pillar posting box provides an old-school touch where any mail dropped off here be postmarked will be stamped in red ink. The design combines both tradition and modernity where Kingsmen Design drew upon SingPost’s heritage and emphasized mid-century modernism and Singapore’s colonial history. Highlighting its uniqueness, the differentiated design here follows 3D architectural lines that outline the store and make it stand out.

Dialogue with Time – Embrace Ageing

to engage

To promote inter-generational dialogue, interactions were weaved in physical and digital spaces from person-to-person conversations to tactile exhibits. Other than seniors being present for guided tours, the Science and Technology zone showcases various facets of ageing using equipment or objects for experiential engagement. Visitors get to navigate the world through the ways of an elderly, creating a safe zone to take on new perceptions and open up rooms for discussion.
